Best budget apps for Mac

Best budget apps for Mac in 2026

Most of the big budget apps treat the Mac as a browser tab. We checked which ones ship a real Mac app, which let their iPhone app run on Apple silicon, and which stay on the web.

Quick pick

Sprout AI is our top pick for Mac: a native app on the Mac App Store, the same account as your iPhone and iPad, and plain-English answers about your spending with charts and tables, in the US and Canada. Copilot Money is the strongest native budgeting app if you're in the US, and Monarch is the most complete budget you'll run in a browser.

  1. 1Sprout AI

Best for: Asking your money questions on a big screenUS$99.99/yr or US$9.99/wk; CA$129.99/yr in Canada (as of Oct 2026)Mac App Store, iPhone, iPad, web; Claude connector

Sprout's Mac app is on the Mac App Store under the name Chat With Your Finance, and it uses the same account as the iPhone and iPad apps, with the same banks, transactions, and saved conversations. The Mac is where the bigger questions fit: compare this quarter with last by category, chart net cash flow by month, or list every charge over $200 since January as a table. Sprout connects eligible US and Canadian institutions read-only through Plaid. If you work in Claude on your Mac, you can connect Sprout there too.

    Strengths

    • Native Mac app on the same account as iPhone and iPad
    • Charts and tables that use the full width of the screen
    • US and Canadian banks, and it connects to Claude

    Trade-offs

    • No envelope budgets; it answers budget questions instead
    • Not built for investment tracking
    • 3-day free trial, and you subscribe in the iPhone app
  2. 2Copilot Money

Best for: A native budgeting app for US Apple usersUS$95/yr or US$13/mo; 1-month trial (as of Oct 2026)Mac App Store, iPhone, iPad, web

Copilot is the only other app on this list with a Mac App Store app (macOS 14 or later), alongside iPhone, iPad, and a web app added in December 2025. It builds category budgets from your history, tracks subscriptions, and connects through Plaid, Mastercard, MX, and Akoya, with direct links for Apple Card and a few others. Apple has named it an Editor's Choice. Its Money Assistant and MCP connector are waitlisted betas, and Copilot works with US-based accounts only, which rules it out for Canadian banks.

    Strengths

    • Native Mac app
    • Polished design and Apple Card integration
    • A full month to try it free

    Trade-offs

    • US-based accounts only
    • AI assistant is still a waitlisted beta
  3. 3Monarch Money

Best for: A full-featured budget you run in the browserUS$99.99/yr or US$14.99/mo; 7-day trial (as of Oct 2026)Web, iPhone, iPad, Android; Chrome extension

Monarch has no Mac app. On a Mac you use it in the browser, and its iPhone and iPad app isn't listed for Macs in the App Store. Monarch also says its new Plus tier features are currently available on desktop, meaning the web app. That's a fine setup if you live in Safari or Chrome anyway. You get Flex or category budgets, rollovers, three bank-data providers, an AI Assistant, and support for the US and Canada, at the same US$99.99 annual price as Sprout.

    Strengths

    • Strong web app with budgets, rollovers, and an AI Assistant
    • Works in the US and Canada
    • Chrome extension

    Trade-offs

    • No native Mac app
    • Bills in USD, with no conversion for mixed CAD and USD accounts
  4. 4YNAB

Best for: Zero-based budgeting in a browser tabUS$109/yr or US$14.99/mo; 34-day trial (as of Oct 2026)Web, iPhone, iPad, Android, Apple Watch

YNAB runs in the browser on a Mac. Its App Store listing covers iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, with no Mac version. If you follow the zero-based method, the web app's big screen is a comfortable place for the weekly session of assigning money to categories. YNAB imports from select US, Canadian, UK, and EU banks, gives you 34 days to try it with no card required, and offers students a free year. Its official ChatGPT app shares articles and a calculator but can't see your accounts.

    Strengths

    • Proven zero-based method
    • 34-day trial with no card required
    • Bank import in the US, Canada, UK, and EU

    Trade-offs

    • No Mac app; web only on a desktop
    • The method takes regular hands-on upkeep
  5. 5Quicken Simplifi

Best for: Cash-flow projections in the browserUS$84.99/yr or US$9.99/mo on the App Store; web from US$3.99/mo billed annually, first year only (as of Oct 2026)Web, iPhone, iPad, Android

Quicken describes Simplifi as cloud-based apps that run on web and mobile, so on a Mac you use the browser. Its Spending Plan and projected cash flow suit people who think in terms of what's left after bills. Quicken AI, a chat assistant in beta, can answer questions about your data and recategorize transactions with your approval. Don't confuse Simplifi with Quicken Classic, Quicken's separate desktop software for Mac and Windows that keeps your data on your computer.

    Strengths

    • Low first-year web price
    • Projected cash flow
    • Works with US and Canadian accounts

    Trade-offs

    • No native Mac app for Simplifi
    • No free trial; the 30-day money-back guarantee covers quicken.com purchases only
  6. 6Origin

Best for: Budgeting plus investing and planning, with a downloadable Mac app (US)US$99/yr or US$12.99/mo; limited-time US$1 first-year offer (as of Oct 2026)Mac (direct download), iPhone, iPad, Android, web

Origin offers a Mac app you download from its own website, with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later recommended, rather than through the Mac App Store. It bundles budgeting with investing, a high-yield cash account, and tax and estate tools, plus an AI Advisor that Origin describes as regulated by the SEC. It connects through Plaid, Finicity, and MX. Origin's mobile app is US-only, and its help center says it can't connect international accounts, offering CSV import instead, so it doesn't sync Canadian banks.

    Strengths

    • Mac app available as a direct download
    • Budgeting, investing, and planning in one place
    • Limited-time US$1 first-year offer

    Trade-offs

    • Not on the Mac App Store
    • US-only mobile app and no international account connections
    • Sells investing and cash products alongside budgeting

Native app or browser tab?

Only two apps on this list ship through the Mac App Store: Sprout and Copilot. Origin offers a Mac app you download from its own site. Monarch, YNAB, Quicken Simplifi, PocketGuard, and EveryDollar run in a browser on the Mac, and Rocket Money's iPhone app can run on Macs with Apple silicon.

We read each app's download page and App Store compatibility list on October 13, 2026. An iPhone or iPad app runs on an Apple-silicon Mac only when its developer allows it, and the App Store lists Mac under Compatibility when that's the case. Monarch, YNAB, PocketGuard, and EveryDollar don't list Mac.

Why a native Mac app is worth having

A browser tab works, but a native app lives in your Dock, opens in its own window, and doesn't get lost among thirty other tabs. For a money app you check a few times a week, that small difference often decides whether you open it at all.

The bigger reason is screen space. Long tables of transactions, month-by-month cash flow charts, and side-by-side period comparisons are easier to read at full width. Sprout's Mac app answers with charts and tables when you ask for them, and your conversations carry over from your iPhone, so a question you start on the train can finish at your desk.

Sprout on the Mac, in Claude, and in the browser

Sprout runs three ways on a Mac. Install the app from the Mac App Store, open the web app in any browser, or connect Sprout to Claude through its plugin or MCP server and ask your money questions there. All three use the same read-only access, and Sprout can't move money in any of them.

Sprout's ChatGPT app has been submitted to OpenAI and is in review. Until it's approved, use the Mac app, the web app, or Claude. The Sprout for Mac page walks through the questions that work best on a big screen, from quarterly comparisons to a full list of recurring charges.

How we picked

We ranked apps for people who do their money check-ins on a Mac. The criteria: a native Mac app or a strong web app, automatic bank connections, read-only access, coverage in the US and Canada, and how quickly you get from opening the app to an answer. Sprout ranks first because it's native on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, works in both countries, and answers in plain English.

Disclosure: Sprout AI is our product, made by MindCrafters LLC, so weigh our ranking with that in mind. We don't use affiliate links and earn nothing if you pick another app. Prices and features come from each company's public pages, checked on October 13, 2026. They change often, so confirm on the vendor's site before you pay.

Common questions

Straight answers.

Which budget apps have a native Mac app?

On this list, Sprout AI and Copilot Money both have native apps on the Mac App Store, and Origin offers a Mac app you download from its website. Copilot and Origin sync US accounts only. Sprout works with eligible US and Canadian institutions.

Does Monarch Money have a Mac app?

No. Monarch runs on the web, iPhone, iPad, and Android, and offers a Chrome extension. Its App Store listing doesn't include Mac, so on a Mac you use Monarch in the browser.

Does YNAB have a Mac app?

No. YNAB's App Store listing covers iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. On a Mac you use YNAB's web app in the browser, which works well for the weekly routine of assigning money to categories.

Can I run iPhone budget apps on my Mac?

Some of them. Macs with Apple silicon can run iPhone and iPad apps when the developer allows it. Rocket Money's iPhone app is listed for Apple-silicon Macs, while Monarch, YNAB, and PocketGuard aren't. Check the Compatibility section of the App Store listing before you count on it.

What about Quicken for Mac?

Quicken still sells Quicken Classic, desktop software for Mac and Windows that keeps your data on your computer. Quicken Simplifi, its newer app, runs on the web and mobile. If you want desktop bookkeeping with local data, Quicken Classic is a different kind of tool from the apps on this list.

How much does Sprout cost on Mac?

Sprout for Mac uses the same Sprout Plus subscription as the iPhone app: US$99.99 per year or US$9.99 per week, or CA$129.99 and CA$12.99 in Canada. You subscribe in the iPhone app, with a 3-day free trial for eligible Apple accounts. See pricing for details.

Ask Sprout where your money went.

Connect your accounts read-only, ask in plain English, and get the number with the receipts. 3 days free on iPhone if eligible.
