Sprout AI vs ChatGPT
ChatGPT Finances vs Sprout AI: which should read your bank accounts?
You can now connect US bank accounts to ChatGPT with Finances in ChatGPT, read-only and included on every consumer plan as of October 2026. Sprout is a dedicated money app for the US and Canada that answers the same kinds of questions with the accounts and dates behind every number, on iPhone, iPad, Mac, the web, and in Claude.
The verdict
If you live in the US and already use ChatGPT, Finances in ChatGPT is free and worth trying first. Choose Sprout if you bank in Canada, want a money app with widgets, a daily Money Minute, and Wrapped on iPhone and Mac, prefer asking in Claude, or need personal and business accounts kept apart with receipts on every answer.

Choose Sprout AI if
- You bank in Canada, or in both countries, and want CAD and USD kept in their own currencies.
- You want a dedicated money app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac with widgets, a Live Activity, the daily Money Minute, Wrapped, and Spending Roast.
- You'd rather ask in Claude, or want a money assistant that isn't tied to one chatbot, with Sprout's ChatGPT app in review.
- You want receipts: exact totals calculated on Sprout's server, with the accounts and dates named on every answer.
- You run a side business and want to choose which accounts each review covers.
Choose ChatGPT if
- You live in the US and want it free: Finances is included on every consumer ChatGPT plan, including Free.
- You already do most of your thinking in ChatGPT and want money questions in the same place.
- You want net worth, investments, and a credit score through Experian next to your spending.
- You're outside the US and only need an occasional one-off look at a statement you upload.
Yes, you can connect your bank to ChatGPT now
OpenAI launched personal finance in ChatGPT for Pro users in the US on May 15, 2026, and rolled it out to Free and Go users in the US on October 2, 2026, according to its release notes. Finances uses Plaid to connect supported accounts and Experian for credit reports. You can open a Finances page with spending, bills, subscriptions, net worth, and investments, or ask in a chat with /finances or @finances.
It is read-only. OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT can't move money, pay bills, change account settings, or make trades, and that it doesn't act as your financial, tax, or investment adviser. For US users, that makes it a free, convenient way to ask where the money went. If it covers what you need, use it.
Where Sprout goes further
Sprout is built for people Finances doesn't reach and for people who want more than a chat. It connects eligible banks in the United States and Canada through Plaid and keeps USD and CAD in their original currencies. It runs as native apps on iPhone, iPad, and the Mac App Store, plus the web, with Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, a Live Activity for today's spending, and Siri and Shortcuts actions.
It also turns checking in into a habit. The daily Money Minute compares yesterday with your usual day, streaks and a growing Sprout pet keep you coming back, Money Wrapped recaps each week and month, and Spending Roast gives you an honest, funny take on your last 30 days. You choose which accounts each review covers, so business and personal money stay separate.
Sprout isn't tied to one assistant either. Ask the same questions in Claude through Sprout's plugin or MCP server. Sprout's own ChatGPT app has been submitted to OpenAI and is in review; the ChatGPT page tracks its status. Wherever you ask, the answers come from the same connected accounts.
Receipts and exact totals
With money, the number has to be right. OpenAI's help center is candid that Finances breakdowns may count transfers, card payments, or duplicate pending items as spending, and that AI can make mistakes. That is a fair warning for any AI reading bank data, Sprout included.
Sprout's answer is to show its work. Totals and period changes are calculated on Sprout's server from your transactions, with the exact change and percentage. Every answer names the accounts and date range behind it, cash flow leaves out transfers between your own accounts, and recurring-charge and unusual-charge results are labeled as estimates to review. You can check every number against your statements.
Budgeting with ChatGPT outside the US: upload a statement
If you're in Canada or anywhere Finances doesn't reach, the usual ChatGPT budgeting method is uploading a statement. OpenAI allows document and spreadsheet uploads on Free and paid plans, with Free users limited to 3 file uploads per day. It works well for a quick look at one month.
The trade-off is upkeep. Each upload is a snapshot, so next month you export and upload again, and totals depend on how cleanly the file reads. Sprout connects once and stays current. Our guide to budgeting with ChatGPT has prompts and limits for both methods.
Export a statement
Download one month of transactions as a CSV or PDF from your bank's website.
Remove what ChatGPT doesn't need
Delete full account numbers and anything else you'd rather not share before you upload.
Upload and ask
Attach the file and ask something specific, such as "Total my spending by category and list the 10 largest purchases."
Check the totals
Compare a few category totals with your statement before you rely on them.
Privacy, deletion, and read-only access
Both options connect through Plaid and both are read-only. OpenAI says temporary chats can't access Finances, finance chats follow your model-training setting, and disconnecting an account doesn't delete information already in your conversation history. You can disconnect accounts in either app, and it's worth reading both privacy policies before you connect anything.
In Sprout, you choose which accounts to connect and can disconnect them at any time. Plaid runs the bank sign-in, so Sprout never sees or stores your bank password. Sprout doesn't sell personal data, and its AI provider receives only your question and the records needed to answer it. Deleting your account in More → Delete account erases your banks, transactions, and conversations. See the security page.
Switching from ChatGPT Finances, or using both
You don't need to give up ChatGPT to try Sprout. You could keep Finances for quick questions inside ChatGPT and use Sprout for daily check-ins, Canadian accounts, and Claude. Asking both the same question is a quick way to compare.
If you decide ChatGPT Finances is enough, cancel Sprout Plus in your Apple account settings at least 24 hours before the trial ends, and delete your Sprout account in More → Delete account to erase your connected banks and transactions.
Explore sample data
Open Sprout and try fictional sample data to see answers, charts, and receipts before you connect a bank.
Start the free trial on iPhone
Subscribe to Sprout Plus in the iPhone app. Eligible Apple accounts get 3 days free.
Connect your US and Canadian accounts
Link the accounts you want through Plaid. You can pick personal and business accounts separately.
Ask the questions you asked ChatGPT
Try "Do I have any duplicate payments?" or "Where did I spend the most this month?" and compare the answers and the receipts.
Common questions
Sprout or ChatGPT? Your questions.
Can I connect my bank account to ChatGPT?
Yes, in the US. Finances in ChatGPT connects supported accounts through Plaid, read-only, on the web, iOS, and Android. Outside the US, you can upload statements instead, or use Sprout, which connects eligible US and Canadian banks and works in Claude.
Is ChatGPT Finances free?
Yes, for US users. OpenAI's help center lists Finances on the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, and its release notes say it reached Free and Go users on October 2, 2026. Sprout Plus costs US$99.99 per year or US$9.99 per week.
Does ChatGPT Finances work in Canada?
Not as of October 2026. OpenAI lists Finances for the U.S. only. Canadians can upload statements to ChatGPT, or connect Canadian banks to Sprout through Plaid and ask on iPhone, Mac, the web, or in Claude. See Sprout in Canada.
Is ChatGPT good for budgeting?
For a quick look, yes. It can break down spending, spot subscriptions, and answer follow-up questions. For a lasting habit, a connected app that stays current and shows the accounts and dates behind each number is easier to trust. US users get that connection free with Finances; Sprout adds Canada and native Apple apps.
Can I use Sprout inside ChatGPT?
Not yet. Sprout's ChatGPT app has been submitted to OpenAI and is in review, so you can't install it today. Sprout works in Claude now through its plugin or MCP server, and in its own apps on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and the web.
Is it safe to connect my bank to ChatGPT or Sprout?
Both use Plaid and both are read-only, so neither can move money. Read each privacy policy: OpenAI notes that disconnecting doesn't delete what's already in your chat history, and Sprout lets you delete your account to erase banks, transactions, and conversations. Our guide Is Plaid safe? explains the connection.
