Sprout AI vs YNAB
Sprout AI vs YNAB: give every dollar a job, or ask where it went?
YNAB is a budgeting method with an app attached: you give every dollar a job and adjust as life happens. Sprout AI skips the method and answers questions about your real spending, with the accounts and dates behind every number.
The verdict
Choose YNAB if you want a proven zero-based method, are ready to keep it current, and value a 34-day trial and sharing with up to six people. Choose Sprout AI if budgets never stick for you and you want answers instead: ask in plain English, get receipts, and use native Mac, iPhone, and iPad apps or Claude.

Choose Sprout AI if
- You have tried budgeting apps before and stopped keeping them up.
- You want to ask "Where did my money go last month?" and get the answer with receipts.
- You want an AI that reads your actual transactions, in the app or in Claude.
- You want a native Mac app instead of a browser tab.
- You prefer a quick daily check-in with streaks to a regular budgeting session.
Choose YNAB if
- You want to learn and follow a proven zero-based method with clear rules.
- You want a long trial: 34 days, with no card when you sign up on YNAB's site.
- You share money with a partner or family and want up to six people on one subscription.
- You need Android or Apple Watch, or banks in the UK or EU.
The core difference
YNAB is a method first. It starts with giving every dollar a job, so each paycheck is assigned to categories before you spend it. When you overspend in one place, you move money from another. YNAB pairs the method with plenty of education. It is the most structured approach in this comparison, and that structure is exactly what some people want.
Sprout AI asks for no method. Connect your accounts and ask what you want to know: "How much did I spend eating out in September?" or "Which subscriptions went up this year?" Sprout answers from your real transactions and names the accounts and dates it used. It is for people who want the insight a budget gives without the upkeep.
Asking vs managing
YNAB is hands-on by design. You assign money, review categories, and adjust when life changes, and that attention is what makes the method work. If you enjoy that rhythm, YNAB is hard to beat. If you have started it a few times and drifted away each time, a different approach may suit you better.
Sprout works whenever you show up. Ask on a Sunday what the week cost, or ask in March what the holidays cost. The daily Money Minute on iPhone is quick: yesterday against your usual day, the month's pace, and recurring charges coming up. Streaks and a Sprout pet turn checking in into a habit.
Sprout does not keep envelopes or rollovers. It answers budget questions instead, like how dining this month compares with last month, and the free 50/30/20 calculator helps you set targets. Our guide to budgeting without a budget explains the approach in detail.
AI and your data
As of October 2026, we found no AI assistant inside YNAB that reads your plan. YNAB's official ChatGPT app surfaces its public posts when you ask money questions, and YNAB's help center says it cannot view your accounts, categories, or transactions. YNAB has a public API that developers build on, and we found no official YNAB connector for Claude.
Sprout is built around AI over your own data. Ask in the app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or the web, or connect Sprout to Claude with the plugin or the remote MCP server and ask there. Sprout's ChatGPT app is in review with OpenAI. In every case, the AI provider receives only your question and the records needed to answer it.
Price and trial, honestly
As of October 2026, YNAB costs US$109 a year or US$14.99 a month. Sprout Plus costs US$99.99 a year or US$9.99 a week, so Sprout's annual plan is about nine dollars less. In Canada, Sprout costs CA$129.99 a year or CA$12.99 a week, and YNAB lists its prices in US dollars.
YNAB's trial is far more generous: 34 days, with no credit card when you sign up on its site, and a free year for college students with proof of enrollment. Sprout's trial is 3 days on iPhone for eligible Apple accounts. You can explore Sprout's fictional sample data first to see how answers look before you connect anything.
Platforms and countries
YNAB runs on the web, iPhone, iPad, Android, and Apple Watch, and on a Mac you use the web app in a browser. Sprout has a native Mac app from the Mac App Store, plus iPhone, iPad, and web, with Home Screen widgets and a Live Activity for today's spending on iPhone. Sprout has no Android version.
Both work in Canada. YNAB offers direct import for select US, Canadian, UK, and EU banks, with one currency per plan. Sprout connects to eligible US and Canadian banks through Plaid and keeps CAD and USD in their own currencies, so cross-border households can ask about both. YNAB reaches more countries; Sprout covers the US and Canada.
Switching from YNAB to Sprout
You do not have to abandon your YNAB plan to try Sprout. Both connect read-only, so neither can move money, and running them side by side for a few weeks is a good way to find out which one you actually open. Many questions you answer in YNAB's reports take one sentence in Sprout.

Common questions
Sprout or YNAB? Your questions.
Is YNAB better than Sprout AI?
YNAB is better if you want to learn a zero-based budgeting method and are ready to keep it current. Sprout is better if you want answers about your spending without maintaining a budget, with receipts on every reply, a native Mac app, and a Claude connector. If YNAB never stuck for you, asking may be easier.
Does YNAB have AI?
As of October 2026, we found no in-app AI assistant that reads your YNAB plan. YNAB's official ChatGPT app answers from its public posts and, per YNAB's help center, cannot view your accounts, categories, or transactions. Sprout's AI answers from your connected transactions and shows the accounts and dates it used.
Is YNAB worth it?
For people who follow the method, YNAB can be worth US$109 a year, and the 34-day trial gives you time to find out. If you have tried it and it did not stick, paying again may not change the result. Sprout costs US$99.99 a year and asks only that you ask a question.
Does YNAB work in Canada?
Yes. YNAB offers direct import for select Canadian banks, with one currency per plan and prices in US dollars. Sprout also connects to eligible Canadian banks through Plaid, keeps CAD and USD in their own currencies, and charges CA$129.99 a year in Canada.
Does YNAB have a Mac app?
Not a native one. YNAB lists web, iPhone, iPad, Android, and Apple Watch, so Mac users use the web app in a browser. Sprout has a native Mac app on the Mac App Store, alongside iPhone, iPad, and the web.
Can I use YNAB and Sprout together?
Yes. Both are read-only, so they never move money or interfere with each other. A common setup is YNAB for planning the month and Sprout for quick questions on iPhone, Mac, or in Claude, like "How much have we spent on the kids this term?"
