Sprout AI vs Monarch Money

Sprout AI vs Monarch Money: ask your money, or manage it?

Monarch Money and Sprout AI both cost US$99.99 a year as of October 2026, and both connect read-only to banks in the US and Canada. Monarch is a full budgeting dashboard built for planning, often with a partner, while Sprout is the money app you simply ask.

The verdict

Pick Monarch Money if you want a structured budget with rollovers and goals, a shared household view for your partner, or Android. Pick Sprout AI if you want answers instead of upkeep: ask where your money went and get the total with the accounts and dates behind it, on a native Mac, iPhone, or iPad app, or right inside Claude. The annual price is the same.

Choose Monarch Money if

  • You budget as a couple and want a shared household on one subscription at no extra cost.
  • You want a structured plan: Flex Budgeting or category budgets, with rollovers for non-monthly costs.
  • You need Android, or a full web dashboard you and your partner both use.
  • You want a longer look before paying. Monarch's trial runs 7 days.

The core difference

Monarch Money is a budgeting dashboard. You connect accounts, choose Flex Budgeting or category budgets, set rollovers for the costs that land once a year, and review it all on the web or in the mobile apps. It rewards people who enjoy keeping a plan current, and Monarch has built a deep set of tools for that job.

Sprout AI starts from the other end. The main screen is a conversation. You ask "How much did we spend on groceries since school started?" and get the total, the breakdown, and the accounts and dates behind it. There is no budget to set up first and nothing to keep current, which suits people whose budgets never made it past week three.

Asking vs managing

Both apps use AI. Monarch offers an AI Assistant for questions about your finances, plus AI-powered Insights and a Weekly Recap, all layered on top of its budgeting tools. In Sprout, the chat is the product. Every answer is calculated from the transactions you connected, and charts and tables appear when they make the answer clearer.

Here is what that looks like. Ask Sprout "What changed between August and September?" and it compares the two periods with the exact dollar change and percentage, then names the accounts and date range it read. Ask a follow-up about one category and the conversation keeps its context. Conversations are saved, so last month's question is still there next month.

Managing has real advantages. A budget tells you in advance what is left to spend, and Monarch's rollovers carry leftover amounts into next month. Sprout answers budget questions on demand instead of tracking envelopes. If you want a spending plan to live inside, Monarch fits better. If you want fast answers you can check, Sprout does.

Price and trial, honestly

As of October 2026, Monarch Core costs US$99.99 a year or US$14.99 a month, and its Plus tier costs US$199.99 a year. Sprout Plus costs the same US$99.99 a year, or US$9.99 a week if you only want it for a short stretch. Over a full year, the two main annual plans cost exactly the same.

Canada is where pricing differs. Monarch says all of its prices are billed in US dollars. Sprout's Canadian price is CA$129.99 a year or CA$12.99 a week, and Apple confirms your local price before you subscribe. Monarch's free trial runs 7 days. Sprout's runs 3 days on iPhone for eligible Apple accounts, and you can explore fictional sample data before connecting a bank at all.

Mac, iPhone, and Canada

Monarch runs on the web, iPhone, iPad, and Android, plus a Chrome extension that syncs Amazon and Target orders. Its App Store listing does not include Mac, so on a Mac you use Monarch in the browser. Sprout runs on iPhone, iPad, the web, and as a native Mac app from the Mac App Store. Sprout has no Android version.

Both apps work with banks in the United States and Canada. Sprout connects to eligible institutions through Plaid and keeps US and Canadian dollars in their original currencies, never combined or converted. If your household spans both countries, you can ask about each account in its own currency. See Sprout in Canada for details.

AI assistants, privacy, and money movement

If you already use Claude, Sprout plugs in today. Install the Sprout plugin or add the remote MCP server, sign in, and ask Claude about your spending with the same read-only data. A ChatGPT app is in review with OpenAI. Monarch launched an official MCP connector and then paused it in June 2026. Monarch says one of its data providers asked it to pause while they work through a data-portability question.

On safety, the two are close. Monarch says its platform is read-only, and so is Sprout: it cannot move money, pay bills, or change accounts. Plaid runs the bank sign-in, so Sprout never sees or stores your banking password. Sprout does not sell personal data, and its AI provider receives only your question and the records needed to answer it. More on our security page.

Switching from Monarch to Sprout

You can try Sprout without touching your Monarch setup. Both apps connect read-only, so running them side by side never moves money or changes your accounts. Give Sprout the questions you normally answer by digging through Monarch's reports and see which app gets you there faster.

  1. Look at the sample data

Open Sprout and explore the fictional sample data to see how answers, charts, and receipts look before you connect anything.

  2. Connect the same banks

Link your accounts through Plaid and pick only the ones you want Sprout to read, US or Canadian.

  3. Ask your usual questions

Spending by category, this month against last, upcoming recurring charges. Each answer names the accounts and dates it used.

  4. Decide before renewal

If Sprout covers what you need, cancel Monarch before it renews. If you like both, keep both.

Common questions

Sprout or Monarch Money? Your questions.

Is Monarch Money better than Sprout AI?

For hands-on budgeting with a partner, Monarch is the stronger tool: shared households, Flex Budgeting, rollovers, and Android. For getting answers fast, Sprout is better: you ask in plain English and every reply shows its accounts and dates. Both cost US$99.99 a year as of October 2026, so choose by how you like to work.

Does Monarch Money have a Mac app?

No. As of October 2026, Monarch offers web, iPhone, iPad, and Android versions plus a Chrome extension, and its App Store listing does not include Mac. Mac users run Monarch in a browser. Sprout has a native Mac app on the Mac App Store, alongside iPhone, iPad, and the web.

Does Monarch Money work in Canada?

Yes. Monarch says it is available in the US and Canada, and all of its prices are billed in US dollars. Sprout also supports eligible Canadian banks through Plaid, charges CA$129.99 a year in Canada, and keeps CAD and USD accounts in their own currencies.

Is Monarch Money worth it?

If you will actually keep a budget current, often yes. It is a mature planner with a 7-day trial, and household members share one subscription. If your budgets tend to fade after a few weeks, paying for another one may not help. Sprout costs the same per year and only asks you to ask a question.

Can I use Monarch and Sprout together?

Yes. Both connect read-only, so neither can move money and they do not interfere with each other. Some people keep Monarch for the household budget and use Sprout on iPhone, Mac, or inside Claude for quick questions like "How much did the trip cost?" Each is a separate subscription.

Does Sprout have budgets like Monarch?

Sprout has no envelopes or rollovers. It answers budget questions instead: ask what you spent on dining against last month, which categories grew, or how your month is pacing, and it calculates from your real transactions. See the budget app page and our guide to budgeting without a budget.
