Monarch Money alternatives

The best Monarch Money alternatives in 2026

Monarch Money is a strong all-in-one budgeting app, and at $99.99 a year it costs the same as Sprout AI. People look elsewhere when they want a native Mac app, cleaner Canadian support, AI that works with outside assistants today, or a lighter routine than a full budget.

Quick pick

Pick Sprout AI if you'd rather ask than maintain a budget. It matches Monarch Core's US$99.99 annual price and adds native Mac and iPad apps, US and Canadian banks with USD and CAD kept apart, and a working Claude connector. Pick Copilot Money for a Mac-first budget in the US, YNAB for zero-based discipline, and Empower for free net-worth tracking.

  1. 1Sprout AI

Best for: Answers about your money without budget upkeepUS$99.99/yr or US$9.99/wk (CA$129.99/yr in Canada), as of Oct 2026iPhone, iPad, Mac, web, Claude

Sprout AI covers the question most people open Monarch to answer: where did my money go, and what changed? Instead of building budget categories, you ask. "How much did we spend on groceries in September versus August?" returns both totals, the exact change and percentage, and the accounts and dates behind them. Sprout connects US and Canadian banks through Plaid, keeps USD and CAD in their own currencies, and runs natively on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Its Claude connector works today, and the ChatGPT app is in review.

    Strengths

    • Same US$99.99 annual price as Monarch Core, with a native Mac app.
    • Claude connector available now, with the ChatGPT app in review.
    • A daily Money Minute, Weekly Money Wrapped, and Spending Roast keep the habit going.

    Trade-offs

    • No category budgets or rollovers. Sprout answers budget questions instead.
    • No investment or home-value tracking.
    • Not on Android, and the iPhone trial lasts 3 days.
  2. 2Copilot Money

Best for: A Mac-first budget for US accounts$95/yr or $13/mo, as of Oct 2026iPhone, iPad, Mac, web

Copilot Money is Monarch's closest rival for Apple users. It has the native Mac app Monarch lacks, plus iPhone, iPad, and a web app. Budgets are built from your spending history with optional rollovers, and Copilot adds direct connections for Apple Card, Capital One, Coinbase, and Venmo. At $95 a year it costs a little less than Monarch Core, and it comes with a one-month free trial. Two limits matter: it supports US-based accounts only, and its Money Assistant and MCP connector are waitlisted betas.

    Strengths

    • Native Mac app with an Apple-first design.
    • A little cheaper than Monarch Core at $95 a year.
    • A one-month free trial.

    Trade-offs

    • US-based accounts only.
    • AI assistant and MCP connector are waitlisted betas.
    • Not on Android, which Monarch supports.
  3. 3YNAB

Best for: Zero-based budgeting discipline$109/yr or $14.99/mo, as of Oct 2026Web, iPhone, iPad, Android, Apple Watch

If Monarch's flexible budgets feel too loose, YNAB goes the other way. You assign every dollar a job before you spend it, and the app's method and lessons are built around that habit. It costs $109 a year, more than Monarch Core, and supports direct import from select US, Canadian, UK, and EU banks. Like Monarch, its bank connection is read-only, and it runs on the web, iPhone, iPad, and Android. It has no AI that reads your transactions, and its official ChatGPT app can't view your accounts.

    Strengths

    • A proven zero-based method with strong teaching.
    • One subscription for up to six people.
    • A 34-day free trial with no card required.

    Trade-offs

    • More hands-on than Monarch: you assign and reconcile money yourself.
    • No AI over your own data.
    • Costs more than Monarch Core, and no native Mac app.
  4. 4Quicken Simplifi

Best for: A cheaper all-rounder in the US or Canada$84.99/yr or $9.99/mo in the US App Store, as of Oct 2026Web, iPhone, iPad, Android

Quicken Simplifi covers much of Monarch's everyday ground for less: a Spending Plan that shows what's left after bills and savings, projected cash flow, subscriptions, and savings goals. In the US App Store it's $84.99 a year, and Quicken's web store runs first-year promotions. It supports US and Canadian accounts in USD or CAD, one currency at a time. Quicken AI, a beta chat, can search your data and suggest changes for your approval. There's no free trial, but purchases on quicken.com have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

    Strengths

    • Lower list price than Monarch Core.
    • Supports Canadian accounts and CAD.
    • Projected cash flow built into the Spending Plan.

    Trade-offs

    • One currency at a time.
    • Quicken AI is a beta for Basic subscribers, without memory between chats.
    • No native Mac app and no free trial.
  5. 5PocketGuard

Best for: A simple safe-to-spend number$74.99/yr, $12.99/mo, or $149.99 lifetime, as of Oct 2026Web, iPhone, Android

PocketGuard strips budgeting down to one number. Leftover is your income minus expenses and goals, so you can see what's safe to spend at a glance. If you want more structure, it also offers zero-based, envelope, and 50/30/20 setups. The annual plan is $74.99, and a $149.99 lifetime plan is rare in this category. PocketGuard supports the US, Canada, and the UK through Plaid, Finicity, and Salt Edge, though its help center lists sync issues with several big Canadian banks. It has a support bot but no AI chat over your finances.

    Strengths

    • The lowest paid annual price on this list, plus a lifetime option.
    • Leftover shows what's safe to spend at a glance.
    • Supports the US, Canada, and the UK.

    Trade-offs

    • Its help center lists sync issues with RBC, TD, BMO, and other Canadian banks.
    • No AI that answers questions about your data.
    • No iPad or Mac app.
  6. 6Empower Personal Dashboard

Best for: Free net-worth and retirement planningFree dashboard, as of Oct 2026Web, iPhone, iPad, Android

If you were eyeing Monarch Plus at $199.99 a year for investment and retirement planning, look at Empower's free dashboard first. It tracks net worth across bank, credit, loan, mortgage, and investment accounts, and adds a Retirement Planner and a check on investment fees. Budgeting is basic, with a monthly spending target and cash-flow views. Empower's business includes managed investing, starting at 0.89% a year, and its terms allow promotional calls and texts unless you opt out. Linking works with US institutions only.

    Strengths

    • Free.
    • Strong net-worth, retirement, and fee analysis.
    • Apps for iPhone, iPad, and Android, plus the web.

    Trade-offs

    • Links US financial institutions only.
    • Basic budgeting and no AI chat over your data.
    • Managed-investing upsell, and promotional calls and texts unless you opt out.

Why people look for a Monarch alternative

Monarch does a lot well. It connects through Plaid, Finicity, and MX, tracks investments and home values, supports household sharing, and runs on the web, iPhone, iPad, and Android. Core costs $99.99 a year after a 7-day trial. Most people who leave aren't unhappy with the budgeting. They hit one of four specific limits.

If none of the limits below apply to you, Monarch is probably still the right app, and switching would cost you time for little gain. If one of them does, the alternatives on this page each fix at least one, and Sprout addresses all four.

  • No native Mac app. Monarch runs on a Mac through the browser, and its App Store listing covers iPhone and iPad.
  • Canada with caveats. Monarch supports Canadian banks, but prices are billed in USD and it doesn't convert currencies, so mixed CAD and USD totals can mislead.
  • MCP connector paused. Monarch says its official connector for AI assistants has been "temporarily paused" since June 2026 while it works through a data-portability question raised by one of its data providers.
  • Budget upkeep. Flex and category budgets reward regular reviews. Some people want straight answers without the upkeep.

How we picked

We compared each app against what Monarch users rely on and what they say is missing. Prices, platforms, and features come from each company's own pricing page, help center, and App Store listing, checked on October 13, 2026. These five criteria set the order:

  • Answers: can you get a straight answer about your spending without building a report?
  • Apple platforms: is there a native Mac app as well as iPhone and iPad?
  • Canada: do Canadian banks connect, and how is CAD handled?
  • AI and assistants: is there AI over your own data, and is it generally available?
  • Price: the annual cost compared with Monarch Core's $99.99.

Sprout AI is our product, made by MindCrafters LLC, and we rank it first because it scores best on the criteria above. That ranking is our judgment. No company paid to appear on this page, and links to other apps are plain links with no affiliate payments. Where another app beats Sprout, its entry says so.

Monarch and the alternatives at a glance

The quickest way to choose is to start from the limit that bothers you. If it's the Mac, look at Sprout AI or Copilot Money. If it's Canada, Sprout AI, YNAB, and Quicken Simplifi connect Canadian banks, each with a different approach to currency. If it's price, PocketGuard and Empower cost less.

Price parity is worth a note. Sprout AI and Monarch Core both cost US$99.99 a year, so the choice between them comes down to how you like to work. Monarch gives you a budget to maintain. Sprout gives you answers to ask for, with a shorter 3-day trial on iPhone.

Switching from Monarch

Plan the move so you keep your history and never pay for two apps longer than you need to. The whole switch takes about an evening of setup, then a few weeks of running both apps side by side while you check that the numbers match.

Your Monarch budgets and rules won't carry over to Sprout, so note the categories and targets you rely on. You won't rebuild them in Sprout. You ask questions like "How much did we spend on dining last month?" instead.

  1. Export your history

Monarch lets you export transactions as a CSV file, and it points users to CSV export while its MCP connector is paused. Save a full export before you cancel so you keep your categorized history.

  2. Connect your banks in the new app

Every app here connects banks directly. Sprout uses Plaid, read-only, and you choose which accounts to share. You can explore Sprout's sample data before connecting anything.

  3. Run both for one cycle

Keep Monarch until your new app has a month of transactions. Compare one total, such as last month's groceries, in both apps before you cancel.

  4. Cancel where you subscribed

If you subscribed through the App Store, cancel in your Apple subscription settings. Deleting an app or an account doesn't end an Apple subscription on its own.

Common questions

Straight answers.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Monarch Money?

Yes. PocketGuard is $74.99 a year with a $149.99 lifetime option, Quicken Simplifi lists at $84.99 a year in the US App Store, Copilot Money is $95 a year, and Empower's dashboard is free. Sprout AI matches Monarch Core at US$99.99 a year.

Does Monarch Money have a Mac app?

Not a native one. Monarch runs on the web, iPhone, iPad, and Android, and its App Store listing doesn't include Mac. Sprout AI and Copilot Money both have native Mac apps. See Sprout on Mac.

Can Monarch Money connect to Claude or ChatGPT?

Monarch built an official MCP connector, but its help center says it has been temporarily paused since June 2026 at a data provider's request. Sprout's Claude connector is live with OAuth sign-in, and its ChatGPT app is in review. See Sprout for Claude.

What's the best Monarch alternative in Canada?

Sprout AI connects eligible Canadian banks through Plaid, keeps CAD and USD in their own currencies, and has Canadian pricing of CA$129.99 a year. YNAB and Quicken Simplifi also support Canadian banks. Copilot Money and Empower don't. See Sprout in Canada.

Is Sprout AI a budgeting app like Monarch?

Sprout works differently. It doesn't keep category budgets or rollovers. You ask questions like "Am I spending more on dining than last month?" and get exact totals and changes. If you want a budget you maintain line by line, Monarch or YNAB fits better. See budgeting with Sprout.

Is Monarch Money read-only?

Yes. Monarch's App Store listing says its platform is read-only, so money can't move. Sprout, Copilot, YNAB, and PocketGuard are read-only too. Read-only alone shouldn't decide your pick. Coverage, platforms, and how you get answers matter more.

Ask Sprout where your money went.

Connect your accounts read-only, ask in plain English, and get the number with the receipts. 3 days free on iPhone if eligible.
