Spending Roast

Let Sprout roast your spending. Every burn comes with receipts.

Tap Roast and Sprout reads your last 30 days, picks the habits that stand out most, and writes a short, funny line about each one. Every line quotes a real number from your accounts, which is why the jokes land.

The short answer

Sprout AI's Spending Roast is a funny, honest review of your last 30 days of spending. It picks your most extreme habits, from coffee runs to delivery orders, and writes a short roast line for each that quotes a real number from your connected accounts. Earned praise keeps it kind, and you can share the card.

Ask it like this

  • “Roast my spending”
  • “How many coffee runs did I make this month?”
  • “How much did I spend on delivery apps in the last 30 days?”
  • “What was my biggest purchase this month?”
  • “Which store got the most of my money since September?”
  • “Did I spend less than the 30 days before?”

Medium rare. 9 delivery orders in 30 days: your front door sees more drivers than a parking garage. 16 coffee runs, and your barista has your birthday saved. But 5 no-spend days? Okay, monk mode. We see you.

What a Spending Roast looks like

A roast is a short stack of one-liners about your last 30 days, ranked by how far each habit sticks out. Sprout looks at coffee runs, delivery orders, rides, Amazon orders, eating out, subscriptions, weekend spending, tiny purchases, fees, and your biggest buy, then keeps the strongest. You get up to six lines, a heat rating, and a closing verdict.

The example lines below are modeled on Sprout's real roast templates. Your version will use different numbers, and probably different habits, because every line is filled in from your own transactions. Sprout only writes a line when there's a real stat behind it, so the roast you get is about the month you actually had.

  • Coffee (example): "16 coffee runs in 30 days. Your barista has your order memorized and your birthday saved."
  • Delivery (example): "9 delivery orders. Your front door sees more drivers than a parking garage."
  • Eating out (example): "43% of your fun money went to eating out. Your kitchen is now a very expensive hallway."
  • Fees (example): "$38.50 in fees. You paid your bank for the privilege of having money."
  • Biggest purchase (example): "Biggest purchase: $640 at Best Buy. Bold. Decisive. Slightly alarming."
  • Praise (example): "5 no-spend days. Okay, monk mode. We see you."

Every joke is backed by a real number

A roast that guesses is just teasing. Sprout builds every line from the transactions in your connected accounts over the last 30 days, and each one quotes a count, a dollar amount, or a percentage. When it says 9 delivery orders, there were 9 delivery orders, and you can search them to check.

Rent and other bills never get roasted as a purchase. Lines about your "fun money" leave out fixed costs like housing, insurance, and loan payments, so the jokes target habits you actually control. Comparisons such as how many months of Netflix your coffee habit equals only appear for US and Canadian dollar accounts, where those reference prices make sense.

Five heat levels, from a light toast to fully scorched

Each roast gets a heat rating from 1 to 5 based on how extreme your stats are, and the closing verdict matches the heat. A calm month earns something like "Honestly? Your spending is pretty chill." A wild one ends with a nudge to pick one habit and cool it down this week. Either way, you finish with one clear thing to try.

The roast heat scale
HeatHeadlineThe verdict, roughly
1Barely a sizzleYour spending is pretty chill. Sprout is almost disappointed.
2Lightly toastedA few habits to watch, nothing a little attention can't fix.
3Medium rareSome habits are running the show. One small change saves real money.
4Extra crispyYour wallet is sweating. Pick one line and tame it this month.
5Fully scorchedCall the fire department, then cool one habit down this week.

Kind by design

The roast pokes at habits, never at you. When you've earned it, Sprout adds a praise line for things like no-spend days, spending at least 10% less than the 30 days before, or keeping at least 40% of what came in. A typical example: "You spent 14% less than the 30 days before. Suspiciously responsible."

If there's nothing to roast yet, Sprout says so. With no recent transactions the card reads "Nothing to roast yet" and invites you to connect a bank. A tame month gets an honest line too, because inventing drama would break the one rule the roast lives by: every number is real.

Share the burn

Roasts are made for the group chat. Sprout turns yours into a story-sized card with the heat rating, the headline, your top lines, and the verdict, ready for Instagram Stories or your share sheet. Share cards never include account names or balances, so you can post the jokes without posting your bank details.

Getting roasted also feeds your money habit. "Get roasted" is one of Sprout's daily quests, and surviving your first roast earns the Well done achievement plus the Ember app icon. See how the rest of the habit system works, or compare notes with the free money personality quiz.

From roast to real change

A roast is the fun way in. The useful part is what you do next. Every line points at a habit you can question in detail: open your spending breakdown, see which subscriptions keep renewing, or ask how this month compares with last. One habit cooled down is worth more than ten resolutions.

For a calmer recap of the same data, your weekly Money Wrapped shows totals, top spots, and your biggest purchase every Sunday. It has fewer jokes, more charts, and the same rule: every number comes from your own accounts, with the dates behind it.

Common questions

Spending Roast: your questions, answered.

Is there an app that roasts your spending?

Yes. Sprout AI has a Spending Roast built into its iPhone, iPad, Mac, and web app. It reads your last 30 days from the accounts you connect and writes funny, honest lines about your habits, each one quoting a real number from your transactions.

Is the Spending Roast mean?

It's playful and never cruel. Lines tease habits like delivery orders and coffee runs, bills like rent are never roasted, and when you've earned it a praise line calls out what you did well, such as no-spend days or spending less than the 30 days before.

Where does the roast get its numbers?

From the bank and card accounts you connect through Plaid, with read-only access. Every line uses your transactions from the last 30 days, so a count or dollar amount in the roast matches what you'd find if you searched those transactions yourself.

How often can I get roasted?

Whenever you like. The roast always covers the 30 days up to today, so it changes as your spending does. Check it after a big weekend, then again a few weeks later to see whether the heat came down.

Can I share my roast?

Yes. Sprout renders your roast as a story-sized card with the heat rating, headline, top lines, and verdict. Post it to Instagram Stories or send it through the share sheet. Share cards leave out account names and balances.

How much does the Spending Roast cost?

The roast is part of Sprout Plus, which costs US$99.99 per year or US$9.99 per week, with a 3-day free trial for eligible Apple accounts on iPhone. There's nothing extra to buy. See pricing for the details.

Can I try it before connecting my bank?

You can explore Sprout with fictional sample data before connecting a bank, which shows how a roast reads. To get roasted on your own habits, connect your accounts through Plaid. You choose which accounts to include and can disconnect them at any time.

Ask Sprout where your money went.

Connect your accounts read-only, ask in plain English, and get the number with the receipts. 3 days free on iPhone if eligible.
