AI spending tracker
The spending tracker you can just ask.
Connect your bank and cards once. Then ask Sprout where your money went this week, this month, or since January, and get the number, the breakdown, and the transactions behind it in seconds.
The short answer
Sprout AI is an automatic spending tracker for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and the web. It reads your bank and card transactions through a read-only Plaid connection, sorts them by category and merchant, and answers spending questions in plain English. Every answer shows the accounts and dates it used, so you can check it.
Ask it like this
- “Where did my money go last month?”
- “How much did I spend on eating out since June?”
- “What were my 10 biggest purchases this year?”
- “Am I spending more on groceries than last spring?”
- “How much went to Amazon in the last 90 days?”
- “What did I spend on the weekend versus weekdays?”
Where did my money go in September?
You spent $3,412 in September across 187 transactions. Rent was the biggest line, and eating out passed groceries for the second month in a row.

Track spending without logging a thing
Most spending trackers fail for one reason: they need you. You type in the coffee, photograph the receipt, fix the category, and by week three the app is a ghost town. Sprout skips that entire routine. Your purchases arrive from your bank and card accounts automatically, already dated, already sorted, and ready to question.
You choose which accounts to connect through Plaid, the bank-connection network behind many of the finance apps you already use. Sprout gets read-only access, which means it can see transactions and balances and nothing else. It cannot move a cent.
Ask the question you actually have
Charts are fine until you want to know something specific. "How much did the kids' activities cost this term?" is not a chart. It is a question, and Sprout answers questions. Type it the way you would say it out loud and Sprout searches the right accounts, the right dates, and the right merchants.
Follow-ups work too. Ask where your money went in August, then ask what changed compared with July, then ask which restaurant took the most. Sprout keeps the context of the conversation so you never have to start over.
- By category: groceries, dining, transport, shopping, travel, utilities, and more.
- By merchant: every dollar sent to Amazon, Uber, Costco, or your favorite taqueria.
- By period: a day, a week, a month, a quarter, or a custom range like "since my birthday".
- By account: just the Amex, just the joint checking, or everything together.
Answers come with receipts
A number you cannot check is a number you cannot trust. Every Sprout answer names the accounts it read and the exact date range it covered, and you can open the transactions behind any total. If something looks off, you can see why in one tap instead of reconciling a spreadsheet at midnight.
That is also why Sprout is careful with what it does not know. Pending charges, a bank that stopped syncing, or a card you never connected all show up as gaps instead of silently becoming zero.
Sprout reports the data it can see. If an account needs reconnecting, the answer tells you, so a missing bank never looks like a frugal month.
Spot the patterns that drain your month
Totals tell you what happened. Patterns tell you what to change. Sprout compares periods with exact differences, so "you spent 18% more on dining in September than August" is a calculation from your data rather than a guess.
It also surfaces the leaks people miss: a subscription that quietly renewed, a duplicate charge, a weekend habit that costs more than the weekday one. The daily Money Minute on iPhone keeps the habit light, one quick story about yesterday's spending next to your usual day.
Built for every screen you use
Use Sprout on iPhone and iPad with Home Screen widgets and a Live Activity for today's spending, on the Mac when you want a bigger view, or in the browser. If you already live in an AI assistant, connect Sprout to Claude and ask your spending questions there.
| Approach | Effort each week | Answers specific questions | Shows the transactions behind totals |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spreadsheet | High: manual entry and categorizing | Only the ones you build formulas for | Yes, if you kept it up |
| Bank app | Low | Rarely, usually one account at a time | For that bank only |
| Category budget app | Medium: reviewing and re-categorizing | Mostly through preset charts | Yes |
| Sprout AI | Low: connect once, then ask | Yes, in plain English | Yes, with accounts and dates on every answer |
Common questions
Spending tracker: your questions, answered.
Is Sprout a free spending tracker?
Sprout Plus costs US$99.99 per year or US$9.99 per week, with a 3-day free trial for eligible Apple accounts on iPhone. You can explore fictional sample data before connecting a bank. See pricing for the details.
Do I have to enter my purchases manually?
No. Sprout imports transactions from the bank and card accounts you connect through Plaid and keeps them up to date. You never type a purchase.
Can Sprout move money or see my bank password?
No. The connection is read-only, so transfers, payments, and card changes are impossible. Plaid handles your bank sign-in and Sprout never sees or stores your banking password. Read more on our security page.
Which banks does the spending tracker support?
Eligible banks, credit unions, and card issuers available through Plaid in the United States and Canada. The connection screen shows exactly which institutions are available to you.
Can I track spending across several banks and credit cards at once?
Yes. Connect every account you want and ask about all of them together or one at a time. US and Canadian dollar accounts stay in their own currencies and are never mixed.
How is this different from the spending chart in my bank app?
Your bank shows one bank. Sprout combines every account you connect and lets you ask follow-up questions, compare periods with exact changes, and open the transactions behind each total.
