Connect Canadian accounts through Plaid

Sprout connects to eligible Canadian institutions through Plaid, the bank-connection network behind many finance apps. That includes big banks and credit unions where Plaid supports them. Coverage depends on Plaid, so the connection screen shows exactly which institutions are available to you before you sign in.

Plaid runs the bank sign-in, so Sprout never sees or stores your banking password. You choose which chequing, savings, and credit card accounts to share, and the access is read-only. Sprout can read transactions and balances and nothing else. Our guide to whether Plaid is safe explains how the connection works.

CAD stays CAD

Plenty of Canadians hold a US dollar account or card for travel, cross-border shopping, or work. Sprout keeps every amount in its original currency. Canadian dollar spending is reported in CAD, US dollar spending in USD, and the two are never combined or converted at a guessed exchange rate.

So when you ask what you spent in September, you might see CA$3,186 on your chequing and Visa plus US$412 on your US dollar card, as two separate figures. That keeps every total checkable against your statements, which is the whole point of answers that come with receipts.

Canadian pricing, in Canadian dollars

Ask where your money went

Sprout is a spending tracker you can talk to. Ask how much you spent on groceries since Thanksgiving, what your phone and streaming bills cost per year, or whether this month is running ahead of last. Sprout searches the right accounts and dates and shows the transactions behind each total.

  • Spending by category or merchant for any date range, plus your biggest purchases.
  • Subscriptions and recurring bills with estimated next dates, annual cost, and price changes. See the subscription tracker.
  • Cash flow in and out of your chequing account by week or month, with transfers between your own accounts excluded.
  • Period comparisons with the exact dollar change and percentage.
  • Unusual charges, like an unusually large expense or a possible duplicate, flagged for you to review.

Budget questions without the envelopes

Sprout doesn't ask you to set up budget envelopes or reassign categories every month. It answers budget questions instead. Ask how your dining spending compares with the spring, or how this month's pace looks against last month, and you get a number from your own data. Read more about Sprout as a budget app.

Sprout is informational. It doesn't give financial, investment, tax, or legal advice, and it can't move money, pay bills, or change your accounts. It shows you what happened clearly enough that the next decision is yours, and an easy one to make.

On iPhone, Mac, and the web

Sprout runs on iPhone and iPad, on the Mac through the Mac App Store, and in any browser at app-sprout.z4k.app. On iPhone you also get Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, a Live Activity for today's spending, and the daily Money Minute check-in. Search for Chat With Your Finance on the App Store.

If you use Claude, you can connect Sprout there too and ask about your Canadian accounts from the chat. Sign in with Apple, Google, or email, and your conversations stay saved, so follow-up questions keep their context from one day to the next.

Common questions

Canada: your questions, answered.

What is the best budgeting app in Canada?

It depends on how you like to manage money. If you want an app that connects Canadian accounts automatically, keeps CAD separate from USD, and answers questions in plain English instead of asking you to maintain categories, Sprout AI is built for exactly that. Try it with sample data first.

Does Sprout work with Canadian banks and credit unions?

Sprout connects eligible Canadian institutions through Plaid, including big banks and credit unions where Plaid supports them. Coverage depends on Plaid, so the connection screen shows which institutions are available before you sign in. The connection is read-only.

How much does Sprout cost in Canada?

Sprout Plus is CA$129.99 per year or CA$12.99 per week. Eligible Apple accounts get a 3-day free trial on iPhone, and Apple confirms the local price before you subscribe. It renews automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the period ends.

Does Sprout convert US dollars to Canadian dollars?

No. USD and CAD stay in their original currencies and are never combined or converted. If you hold a US dollar account or card, its spending appears as a separate US$ figure next to your CA$ totals.

Is it safe to connect my Canadian bank account?

The connection is read-only, so Sprout can't move money or change your accounts. Plaid handles the bank sign-in and Sprout never sees or stores your banking password. You choose which accounts to connect, you can disconnect at any time, and deleting your account erases your banks, transactions, and conversations.

Can Sprout help with Canadian taxes?

Sprout is informational and does not give tax advice. It can pull a year of spending by category or merchant from your connected accounts, which is a useful starting point for a conversation with your accountant.
