Best AI budgeting apps

The best AI budgeting apps in 2026

Plenty of budget apps now say AI, but only some let you ask questions about your own transactions, and several of those are still in beta or behind a waitlist. We compared seven apps whose AI works with your real account data and noted exactly where each feature stands as of October 2026.

Quick pick

Pick Sprout AI for chat-first answers about your own money, with the accounts and dates shown on every reply, in the US or Canada, on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and through Claude. Pick Monarch Money if you want AI inside a full budgeting suite, ChatGPT Finances for a free US-only option, and Origin if you also want regulated investment advice.

  1. 1Sprout AI

Best for: Chat-first answers about your own moneyUS$99.99/yr or US$9.99/wk (CA$129.99/yr in Canada), as of Oct 2026iPhone, iPad, Mac, web, Claude

Sprout AI is built around the chat. Connect US or Canadian accounts through Plaid, read-only, then ask about spending, cash flow, subscriptions, or unusual charges. "How did my spending in September compare with August?" returns the exact change and percentage, with the accounts and date range named. Answers can include charts and tables, and follow-up questions keep the context. The same data works inside Claude through Sprout's connector, and a ChatGPT app is in review. USD and CAD are never combined or converted.

    Strengths

    • Chat is the main interface, generally available to every subscriber.
    • Every answer shows its receipts: the accounts and the date range.
    • US and Canada, native Apple apps including Mac, and a Claude connector.

    Trade-offs

    • No category budgets. Sprout answers budget questions instead.
    • No investment tracking, and no financial advice.
    • Not on Android, and the iPhone trial lasts 3 days.
  2. 2Monarch Money

Best for: AI inside a full budgeting suite$99.99/yr or $14.99/mo (Plus $199.99/yr), as of Oct 2026Web, iPhone, iPad, Android

Monarch Money adds three AI features to a mature budgeting app: an AI Assistant for natural-language questions about your data, AI-powered insights, and a Weekly Recap. Monarch says it uses models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, and AI categorization can't be turned off. The assistant sits beside budgets, cash flow, investments, and net worth, so you can ask a question and adjust your budget in the same place. Its MCP connector for outside AI assistants has been paused since June 2026.

    Strengths

    • AI Assistant available now inside a full budgeting suite.
    • Weekly Recap and AI-powered insights.
    • Web, iPhone, iPad, and Android, in the US and Canada.

    Trade-offs

    • The MCP connector for Claude and other assistants is paused.
    • AI categorization can't be switched off.
    • No native Mac app.
  3. 3ChatGPT Finances

Best for: Free AI answers for US accountsFree on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro (US), as of Oct 2026Web, iOS, Android

ChatGPT now connects to US bank accounts through Plaid, and to credit reports through Experian, in a feature called Finances. OpenAI's help center lists it for Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users in the US. Type /finances to see spending by category, subscriptions, upcoming payments, and net worth, or ask questions in plain language. It's read-only: ChatGPT can't move money or pay bills. OpenAI notes that breakdowns may count transfers or card payments as spending, and that disconnecting doesn't delete finance details already in your chats.

    Strengths

    • Free on ChatGPT's Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans in the US.
    • Bank accounts and Experian credit in one chat.
    • Read-only, per OpenAI's help center.

    Trade-offs

    • US only, so Canadian banks can't connect.
    • OpenAI warns breakdowns may count transfers or card payments as spending.
    • Disconnecting doesn't remove finance details already in your chat history.
  4. 4Origin

Best for: AI advice plus investing in one app$99/yr or $12.99/mo ($1 first-year promo), as of Oct 2026iPhone, iPad, Android, web; Mac download

Origin pairs budgeting with an AI Advisor that it markets as the first AI financial advisor regulated by the SEC, a company claim. Advice runs through Origin Investment Advisory, LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser. The app also offers investing, a high-yield cash account, tax and estate tools, and paid sessions with a human financial planner. Origin was advertising a $1 first year in October 2026, then $99 a year. Its mobile app is US-only.

    Strengths

    • AI Advisor tied to an SEC-registered investment adviser.
    • Budgeting, investing, cash, and estate tools in one subscription.
    • A partner is included at no extra cost.

    Trade-offs

    • US-only on mobile.
    • The Mac app is a download from Origin's site, not the Mac App Store.
    • The bundle includes investing and cash products you may not want.
  5. 5Cleo

Best for: Chat and voice coaching with a playful tonePlus $5.99/mo, Pro $8.99/mo, Builder $14.99/mo, as of Oct 2026iPhone, Android

Cleo is a chat-first AI money coach that talks about your money by text or two-way voice, with memory and reasoning added in its 2025 update. Cleo describes its February 2026 Autopilot feature as a move from recommending money actions to carrying them out. Its paid plans center on financial products: cash advances of up to $250, or up to $500 on Builder with qualifying direct deposits, plus savings and a credit-builder card. In March 2025 Cleo agreed to pay $17 million to settle an FTC lawsuit. The FTC alleged it misled users about how much they could advance and how fast.

    Strengths

    • A mature chat and two-way voice experience.
    • Low monthly prices and free money-management features.
    • Remembers context across conversations.

    Trade-offs

    • Paid plans are built around cash advances and banking products.
    • Serves the US and the UK; Canada isn't listed.
    • No iPad or Mac app.
  6. 6Copilot Money

Best for: An agentic assistant for US Apple users, once you're off the waitlist$95/yr or $13/mo, as of Oct 2026iPhone, iPad, Mac, web

Copilot Money's Money Assistant is ambitious. Since April 2026 it has been a public beta with a waitlist, offering daily briefings and anomaly alerts. Since August it can create, edit, and delete categories, budgets, transactions, recurring items, and rules, asking for your approval before it changes anything. Copilot also has a read-only MCP beta, tested with Claude, ChatGPT, and Codex CLI, behind its own waitlist. The app itself is a polished, US-only budgeting tool with a native Mac app.

    Strengths

    • The assistant can edit your budget and transactions, with your approval.
    • An MCP beta for Claude and ChatGPT.
    • Native iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps, and a one-month trial.

    Trade-offs

    • Money Assistant and MCP are waitlisted betas.
    • US-based accounts only.
    • Not on Android.
  7. 7Quicken Simplifi

Best for: Budget-friendly AI chat in a planning app$84.99/yr or $9.99/mo in the US App Store, as of Oct 2026Web, iPhone, iPad, Android

Quicken AI, formerly Quicken Assist Chat, is a beta chat inside Quicken Simplifi. It uses your Simplifi data, plus web search, to answer questions, find transactions, and propose changes such as recategorizing transactions or creating goals and rules, which you approve first. Quicken says it can't move money and can't yet remember earlier conversations. It's currently available to Basic subscribers and isn't offered in shared spaces. Simplifi itself supports US and Canadian accounts, one currency at a time.

    Strengths

    • Proposes changes and waits for your approval.
    • Uses web search alongside your own data.
    • US and Canadian accounts at a low App Store price.

    Trade-offs

    • A beta, limited to Basic subscribers.
    • No memory between conversations yet.
    • No native Mac app and no free trial.

How we picked

We only included apps whose AI works with your own account data. A chatbot that explains budgeting in general didn't qualify, and neither did a support bot. We checked each AI feature's status on the company's own pages on October 13, 2026, and we say whether it's available, in beta, or behind a waitlist. Five criteria set the order:

  • Answers from your data: the AI reads your real transactions, not generic tips.
  • Receipts: you can see which accounts and dates an answer used.
  • Status: generally available beats beta, and beta beats a waitlist.
  • Reach: US and Canadian banks, native Apple apps, and access from AI assistants like Claude.
  • Hands off your money: AI that never moves money, sells loans, or offers cash advances.

Sprout AI is our product, made by MindCrafters LLC, and we rank it first because it scores best on the criteria above. That ranking is our judgment. No company paid to appear on this page, and links to other apps are plain links with no affiliate payments. Where another app beats Sprout, its entry says so.

AI feature status at a glance

Status matters as much as features. An assistant you can't use yet won't tell you where your money went this month. Countries below are where each app connects banks, as listed on its own pages, which isn't always where its AI feature runs.

The last column is about the whole app, not the chat alone. Some apps pair their AI with cash advances, investing, or account edits. Others, Sprout included, only read your data. Decide which side of that line you want before you compare features.

Also worth knowing

Rocket Money's Rowan is an AI agent that works by text message for select Premium+ members, at $15 a month. Rocket says it can start cancellations and negotiations, set up savings transfers, and request refunds. We left it off the main list because access is limited to select members of one plan.

YNAB has an official ChatGPT app, but YNAB's help center says it can't view your accounts, categories, or transactions. Credit Karma, where Mint users were sent, has an assistant called Intuit Assist and a Claude connector. PocketGuard's Quantra is a customer-support bot rather than an assistant for your money.

What to look for in an AI budgeting app

Ask one question you already know the answer to. If you spent $412 at Costco last month, ask the app. A good AI gets the exact number and shows the transactions behind it. A weak one guesses, rounds, or counts a credit card payment as spending.

Then check three things. Can you see which accounts and dates the answer used? Does it handle your country and currency? And how does the company make money? It's worth knowing whether the app earns from a subscription alone or also from loans, advances, or investment products.

Finally, think about where you want to ask. Sprout works in its own apps and inside Claude. ChatGPT Finances lives in ChatGPT. Copilot's connector for outside assistants is a waitlisted beta, and Monarch's is paused. Read more on using Sprout with Claude and Sprout's ChatGPT app.

Common questions

Straight answers.

What is the best AI budgeting app?

By our criteria, Sprout AI: chat-first answers from your own accounts, receipts on every reply, US and Canadian banks, native Apple apps including Mac, and a live Claude connector. Monarch Money is the pick if you want AI inside a full budgeting suite, and ChatGPT Finances is the best free option for US accounts.

Can ChatGPT connect to my bank account?

Yes, in the US. Finances in ChatGPT connects accounts through Plaid and is available on the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, read-only. It isn't available in Canada. Canadians can use Sprout AI, which connects Canadian banks and works in Claude, with its ChatGPT app in review. See Sprout and ChatGPT.

Is it safe to let an AI read my bank transactions?

Look for read-only access through a provider like Plaid, so the app never sees your bank password and can't move money. Sprout works that way, and its AI provider receives only your question and the records needed to answer it. Read how Sprout protects your data.

Which AI budgeting apps work in Canada?

Sprout AI, Monarch Money, and Quicken Simplifi support Canadian banks, though Quicken's help pages don't say whether its AI beta works in Canada. ChatGPT Finances, Copilot Money, and Origin are US-focused, and Cleo serves the US and the UK. See Sprout in Canada.

Do AI budgeting apps give financial advice?

Most don't. Sprout and ChatGPT Finances both say they provide information, not financial advice. Origin is the exception on this list: its AI Advisor runs through Origin Investment Advisory, an SEC-registered investment adviser. Treat every AI answer as a starting point and check the numbers it shows.

Can an AI budgeting app move my money?

Some can act on your accounts. Copilot's assistant can edit budgets and transactions with your approval, Cleo offers cash advances, and Rocket Money's Rowan can start cancellations and savings transfers. Sprout AI, Monarch Money, and ChatGPT Finances are read-only and can't move money.

Ask Sprout where your money went.

Connect your accounts read-only, ask in plain English, and get the number with the receipts. 3 days free on iPhone if eligible.
