The short answer
Yes. In the United States, Finances in ChatGPT connects your bank and card accounts through Plaid with read-only access on every personal plan, including Free. Everywhere else, including Canada, export a CSV, remove account numbers, upload it, and ask specific questions. Either way, ask for the transactions behind each total and check them before acting.
Two ways to budget with ChatGPT
ChatGPT can work with your real numbers in two ways. If you live in the United States, Finances in ChatGPT connects your bank, card, and investment accounts through Plaid and keeps them synced. If you live elsewhere, or prefer not to connect accounts, you can export statements from your bank and upload the file.
Both routes let you ask plain-English questions about spending, subscriptions, and trends. The difference is in setup, freshness, and how much checking you need to do. Connected accounts stay current on their own. Uploaded files are a snapshot that you prepare and clean yourself each time.
| Route | Who can use it | Setup | Data freshness | Main thing to watch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Finances in ChatGPT | US users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans | A few minutes through Plaid | Syncs automatically | Gaps when an institution shares partial data |
| Uploaded statements | Anyone, in any country | 20 to 30 minutes preparing the file | Frozen on the day you export | Redaction, double counting, and arithmetic on big files |
Route 1: Connect your accounts with Finances in ChatGPT
Finances in ChatGPT uses Plaid to connect supported financial accounts. According to OpenAI's help center, ChatGPT can then read balances, transactions, investments, and liabilities, but it cannot see full account numbers, move money, pay bills, place trades, or change your accounts. A Finances page shows spending, bills, subscriptions, net worth, and investments in one place.
OpenAI lists Finances as available in the United States on web, iOS, and Android for Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users. It started with Pro in May 2026, and since October 2, 2026 it has been rolling out to Free and Go users, so some eligible accounts may not see it yet. A credit score from Experian is a separate, optional connection.
Open Finances and select Get started
Find Finances in ChatGPT, or type "@Finances, connect my accounts" in any conversation to start from chat.
Select Connect with Plaid
Plaid's window opens and you search for your bank or card issuer. If your bank supports OAuth, you sign in on the bank's own website or app.
Choose what to share
Sign in and select the institutions and accounts you want ChatGPT to read. Connect only the accounts you want included in answers.
Wait for the first sync
OpenAI says syncing and categorizing usually takes a few minutes and occasionally several hours. The Finances page shows when each account last synced and whether one needs attention.
Ask your first question
Start broad, like "Where did I spend the most money this month?", then narrow down with follow-ups about categories, merchants, or months.
Route 2: Upload exported statements (Canada and everywhere else)
If Finances is not available where you live, uploading still works. OpenAI's help center lists CSV and Excel files among supported uploads, and ChatGPT can explore trends in a spreadsheet and chart them. Plan on 20 to 30 minutes the first time, mostly spent preparing the file so the answers can be trusted.
Save the cleaned file when you finish. Next month you can paste new rows into the same layout instead of starting over.
Export 90 days from each account
On your bank's website, find the transaction download or export option and choose CSV for the last three months. Repeat for each credit card. Ninety days shows patterns without making the file unwieldy.
Remove what ChatGPT does not need
Delete columns with account numbers, card numbers, and anything that identifies you. Keep date, description, amount, and category if your bank provides one. Scan descriptions for names or reference numbers you would not want to share.
Combine files and make them consistent
Paste everything into one sheet with an Account column, like "Visa" or "Checking". Banks show spending differently: some use negative numbers, others a separate debit column. Pick one convention for every row.
Remove transfers and card payments
Delete payments to your own credit cards and transfers between your accounts, or label them clearly. Otherwise ChatGPT will count the same spending twice.
Upload, describe the columns, and check one total
Tell ChatGPT what each column means, whether spending is positive or negative, and the date range. Then add up one category yourself and compare. If it does not match, ask for the rows it used and find the gap.
10 ChatGPT budgeting prompts to copy and paste
The first six prompts work with connected accounts or an uploaded file. The last four are written for uploads, where ChatGPT needs help reading the data and you need a way to check its math.
Keep each prompt focused on one question and change the months and amounts to fit you. Asking for the transactions behind a total is the most useful habit you can build, because it turns every answer into something you can verify.
- "Where did I spend the most money this month? Break it down by category and top merchants."
- "What subscriptions and recurring charges am I paying for, and what does each cost per year?"
- "Compare my spending in August and September by category. Show the dollar and percentage change for each."
- "How much did I spend on Saturdays and Sundays compared with weekdays over the last three months?"
- "Do I have any charges that look like duplicates: same merchant, same amount, within three days?"
- "Suggest three specific changes that would cut $200 a month, using only my actual merchants and amounts."
- "This file has columns for date, description, amount, and account. Spending is negative. Show the first five rows and the date range so I know you read it correctly."
- "Categorize every transaction into housing, utilities, groceries, eating out, transport, shopping, subscriptions, health, entertainment, and other. Show monthly totals."
- "Show every eating out transaction in September sorted by amount, then total them so I can check your math."
- "Using my average monthly spending, apply a 50/30/20 split to my $4,200 take-home pay and show where I am over."
Privacy precautions for both routes
With Finances, Plaid handles the bank sign-in, so ChatGPT never receives your bank password, and OpenAI says ChatGPT cannot see full account numbers. Finance conversations follow the same model training setting as the rest of ChatGPT, which you control under Settings, then Data controls. If you disconnect, OpenAI says synced account data is deleted from its systems within 30 days, but conversations already in your history stay until you delete them.
With uploads, you decide what leaves your computer, so redact before you share. Remove account numbers, card numbers, your name, and your address. Descriptions can still reveal your employer, pharmacy, or neighborhood, so delete rows you would not want stored. On plans for individuals, OpenAI may use content to train its models unless you turn off Improve the model for everyone.
Two more details from OpenAI's help center. Temporary Chats are not used for training and are deleted after 30 days, though they cannot use financial connections. Giving feedback on a response, such as a thumbs up, may let OpenAI use that whole conversation to improve its models even if you opted out. Where ChatGPT budgeting falls short
Both routes are useful, and both have limits worth knowing before you act on an answer. Some come from the data itself, others from how a language model handles long lists of numbers.
OpenAI is explicit that ChatGPT can help you understand and plan but does not act as a financial, legal, tax, or investment adviser. Treat answers as a starting point and check the transactions behind any number you plan to act on.
| Limit | Route | What happens | Workaround |
|---|---|---|---|
| Country coverage | Connected | OpenAI lists Finances as available in the US | Upload exported statements instead |
| Partial institution data | Connected | Some institutions share balances but not full transaction history | Check what synced and fill gaps with an export |
| Sync status | Connected | Totals reflect the last successful sync | Check the Finances page for accounts that need attention |
| Stale data | Upload | Answers reflect the day you exported | Re-export before each session |
| Arithmetic on big files | Upload | Totals can be off when rows are skipped or misread | Ask for the rows behind each total |
| Double counting | Upload | Card payments and transfers inflate spending | Remove them before uploading |
| Mixed currencies | Upload | US and Canadian dollar rows can get added together | Split files by currency or say so in the prompt |
| Category guesses | Both | Cryptic merchant names land in the wrong category | Review the category list and correct outliers |
Sprout AI: an alternative built for money questions
If you want a dedicated money assistant, Sprout AI connects eligible banks and card issuers in the United States and Canada through a read-only Plaid connection. Sprout never sees your bank password and cannot move money. US and Canadian dollar accounts stay in their own currencies and are never combined.
Every answer names the accounts and date range behind it, so you can check any number. Sprout runs as an app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac and in the browser, with Home Screen widgets, a Live Activity for today's spending, and a daily Money Minute on iPhone that turns checking in into a habit. Our Sprout vs ChatGPT comparison covers the differences in detail.
Sprout also works where you already chat. It connects to Claude today. Sprout's ChatGPT app has been submitted to OpenAI and is in review, so it is coming to ChatGPT but not there yet.
